Ryoan-ji Temple, Northwest Kyoto, Japan
The stone garden at Ryoan-ji Temple; a Japanese garden that epitomises the world of Zen. This Zen garden isn’t for enjoying the scenery but for allowing quiet, soothing meditation. It features a placement of a total of 15 stones of various sizes, in groups of 5, 2, 3, 2 and 3 starting from the east side, all surrounded by raked sand. Many of the profound mysteries surrounding the garden still entice debate today, such as the stones being placed so that one of them is always hidden no matter the angle from which the garden is observed, and the river-like flow created by the placement of stones, sand and moss.
